Mrs. Semmes Before joining Mountain Laurel, Deryn Semmes received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in drama from Colorado College and her Infant and Toddler Credential from the American Montessori Society. She was a directress of a toddler community for several years at Versailles Montessori in Kentucky before moving to Virginia in 1998.

Deryn Semmes received her M. Ed. and AMI elementary certification at Loyola College in Baltimore and became Mountain Laurel's second elementary teacher in 2001. She is mother of two children who have both benefited from Montessori education. Her daughter is now a high school sophomore and her son, Clayton, is in his second year at our Farm School. Deryn finds joy in her work every day and what she loves most is discovering the universe with the children.

"The greatest sign of success for a teacher...is to be able to say,
'The children are now working as if I did not exist.'"
